10 gigabit Ethernet PON (10GEPON)

10GEPON is another Gigabit PON variant based on 10 Gigabit Ethernet. Full Service Access Network( FSAN) and IEEE 802.3 is dealing with this topic and a standardization of 10GEPON in the working group802.3av.

In addition to the 10-fold higher data rate compared to Gigabit PON( GPON), the coexistence of 10GEPON with GPON is to be ensured. Asymmetrical transmission with 10 Gbit/s downstream and 1 Gbit/s upstream and symmetrical transmission with 10 Gbit/s each are being discussed as approaches. The bridgeable distances for 10GEPON are 20 km over monomode fibers.

The different PON variants that can be used in the access area

The 10GEPON concept is used in the access area and is intended to meet the growing demand for bandwidth in households, especially in connection withHDTV and Large Screen Digital Imagery( LSDI). This involves the extension of Ethernet in the First Mile( EFM). The 10GEPON concept envisages a distribution network between the central exchange and the home area network, to which 32 home networks can be connected via optical fiber at a data rate of 10 Gbit/s.
