100 gigabit small form factor pluggable (CFP)

CFP modules (100 Gigabit Small Form Factor Pluggable) are small, pluggable transceiver modules in which the optical interfaces for 100 Gigabit Ethernet are implemented, comparable to the XFP modules for 10 Gigabit Ethernet.

CFP modules are optical transceivers with optical transmitters and receivers, with multiplexers and demultiplexers, with which the ten parallel data streams are combined at 10 Gbit/s each and multiplexed to 25 Gbit/s in four wavelengths. CFP modules have a width of 82 mm, they are hot-swappable, which means that they can be replaced during normal operation. They have transmission rates of 100 Gbit/s and typically operate at wavelengths of 850 nm and 1,310 nm. They are used in 100 Gigabit Ethernet( 100GbE), 40 Gigabit Ethernet( 40GbE), Fibre Channel( FC) as well as Synchronous Optical Networks( SONET) and the SDH network.

Four distributed feedback lasers( DFB) are used in the CFP module; because of their high optical output power, CFP modules must have optimal heat dissipation. In addition to the CFP module for 10 x 10GbE, there is also the CFP2 module for 10 x 10GbE and 4 x 25GbE, the narrower CFP4 module for 4 x 25GbE and the CFP8 module for 16 x 25GbE and 8 x 50GbE. The CFP2 module is 41.5 mm wide, the CFP4 module is 21.7 mm wide and the CFP8 module is 40 mm wide.

For Gigabit Ethernet, the corresponding interface module is called SFP module (Small Form Factor Pluggable) and for 10 Gigabit Ethernet it is called XFP module (10 Gigabit Small Form Factor Pluggable).
