3.9 generation (3.9G)

Mobile communications networks are chronologically divided into generations. Thus there are the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generations(3G), each of which characterizes a leap forward in development that is primarily characterized by new technologies and higher data transmission rates.

3G represents UMTS and 3.5G the high-speed technologies High Speed Downlink Packet Access( HSDPA) and High Speed Uplink Packet Access( HSUPA), which are based on UMTS.

Generations of mobile communications networks

The 3.9th generation, standardized by the Third Generation Partnership Project( 3GPP) in 2007, is a direct approximation of the 4th generation. In 3.9G, also known as Super 3G, data rates of 100 Mbit/s for receiving and 50 Mbit/s for transmitting signals are specified. The technology used for this is based on Long Term Evolution( LTE). The 3.9th generation will enter the 4th generation.
