AirPort

The AirPort Base Station is a wireless access point and WLAN router from Apple. The AirPort Express base stations for private WLANs and AirPort Extreme for more demanding applications are offered.

Connecting AirPort

The AirPort base station is connected to a DSL or cable modem. The wireless WLAN can be used by any computer, such as a Macintosh or personal computer, that supports an IEEE 802.11 wireless standard. As a terminal device, all new Macintosh models have a built-in WLAN card for wireless communication. To transfer files, the AirPort base station works with the Bonjour technology of the Mac OS X operating system. A Macintosh can thus find other computers with the same operating system within range of the network.

Those who want to run print jobs from one or more computers to a printer connect the printer to the base station's USB port and add the device to the Macintosh's or a personal computer's printer list. Wireless printing does not require a broadband connection to the Internet. To listen to music over the wireless network, stereo systems or powered speakers can also be connected to the USB interface of the base station. An iPhone or iPod touch, onto which the "Remote" program has been downloaded free of charge from the App Store, can also be used as a remote control. The user can use it to select their music tracks and videos and adjust the volume.

The AirPort Express base station is designed for private WLANs and enables data transmission under 802.11n. One base station supports up to ten users who can simultaneously access the same Internet connection or share files via file sharing.

The AirPort Extreme base station enables wireless networking for a maximum of 50 users. The base station operates on the 2.4 GHz radio frequency of the 802.11b and 802.11g standards and on the 5 GHz of 802.11n, in this case also with Multiple Input Multiple Output( MIMO) for simultaneous transmission of multiple data streams.

An external data storage device can also be connected to the USB interface of the AirPort Extreme base station, which is treated like a network volume and is available to all users as a file server.
