Astra satellite

Astra is a trademark and trade name of Société Européenne des Satellites( SES), which owns and operates the Astra satellite system.

Under the Astra designation, 13 geostationary communications satellites are operated, designated by the numbers 1, 2, and 3 and by letters, and positioned in orbit at various positions: 1A through 1H, 2A through D, and 3A. The footprints of all Astra satellites are pointed at Europe. Depending on the size of the dish antenna, the more than 1,000 digital and analog television channels and radio stations can also be received in the peripheral areas of the footprint.

Astra satellites 1A to 1D have 16 transponders for television, 1E to 1H are for digital TV, 2A to 2C have return channels, DVB-RCS, and satellite 3A additionally offers broadband data services such as the Astra Broadband Interactive System( ABIS) service. Each Astra satellite operates at a channel spacing of 27 MHz and has approximately 17 transmission channels. In addition to Standard Definition Television( SDTV), High Definition Television( HDTV) is also transmitted, with surround sound according to Dolby Digital 5.1. In addition, work is also underway to introduce Ultra-HDTV( UHDTV), which features an extremely high resolution of 3,840 × 2,160 pixels and is compressed using High Efficiency Video Coding( HEVC). Free TV and pay TV are offered as services.

The transmission frequencies of the Astra satellites are in the Ku-band. Analogue TV is transmitted in the low band between 10.70 GHz and 11.70 GHz; digital TV via DVB-S, on the other hand, is transmitted in the high band between 11.7 GHz and 12.75 GHz.

The geostationary position of Astra satellite 1A is at 19.2° east latitude, that of Astra 2A to 2 C at 28.2° east, and that of 3A at 24.2° east, both relative to the Greenwich meridian.
