CoaXPress (CXP)

Like CameraLink, GigE Vision, 10GigE Vision and USB3 Vision, CoaXPress ( CXP) is a camera interface for industrial cameras in machine vision. With CoaXPress, image processing data, control data and the supply voltage are transmitted via this interface and the connected coaxial cable.

CoaXPress requires a frame grabber for operation. The transmission can be done via an inexpensive coaxial cable like RG-59 cable or similar with BNC connector, which transmits the data with a data rate of 6.25 Gbit/s from the industrial camera to the frame grabber.

By aggregating several CoaXPress cables, the data rate is cumulated. Corresponding special connectors are available. Thus, a data rate of 25 Gbit/s is achieved with four CoaXPress cables. This data rate corresponds to a data transfer rate of 600 MB/s, and the data transfer rate aggregated over four data cables is 2.4 GB/s. In addition to this CXP-6x4 version, there are also CXP-12 with one coaxial cable and CXP-12x4 with four cables and a data throughput of 5,000 MB/s. The distances that can be bridged depend on the quality of the coaxial cable; depending on the version, they are 30 m or 60 m.

On the CoaXPress cable, data is transmitted in both directions. The uplink from the host to the device, through which control and configuration data are transmitted to the device, has a data rate of 20 MB/s.

The coaxial cables can also be used to transmit power to the connected devices, as power over coax, at a level of 13W. Like the other transport layer standards, CoaXPress works with the Generic Interface for Cameras( GenICam), whose transport layer is the Generic Transport Layer( GenTL).
