CobraNet

CobraNet is a network concept developed by Cirrus Logic for networking and real-time transmission ofdigital audio. It is a technology used in high-rise buildings, airports, train stations, theme parks, and theater technology where audio streams need to be distributed.

With digital audio networking, any audio input can be routed to any audio output in any combination. CobraNet is also used in wireless systems and in wireless microphones.

CobraNet is based on Fast Ethernet and can carry up to 64 uncompressed audio channels. The audio end devices are supplied with power using Power over Ethernet( PoE) according to IEEE 802.3af. Power is supplied via two or four wire pairs with up to 14 W. The CobraNet concept covers all audio components for digital audio from microphones to AD converters, audio servers, DA converters, amplifiers and loudspeakers.

In order to be able to provide CobraNet with much higher data rates, a revised version will use Gigabit Ethernet and be able to transmit up to 700 uncompressed audio channels. Since CobraNet is used in the professional audio sector, it works with a sampling rate of 192 kHz and a sampling depth of 32 bits. This corresponds to a data rate of 43 Gbit/s. An important criterion for real-time transmission of digital audio is the latency of the networks.
