D2 format

The D2 digital video recording format is a significant improvement over the D1 format. D2, developed by Ampex, uses a 3/4"-mm magnetic tape just like D1, but the track width has been reduced to 35 µm.

In addition, the shortest recordable wavelength has been reduced compared to the D1 format, resulting in higher resolution. D2 digitizes the FBAS signal with a sampling rate of 12.7 MHz and a sampling depth of 8 bits. The D2 format has four digital audio channels and, like the D1 format, uses cassettes with a 3/4" magnetic tape. There are cassettes with recording times of 32 and 94 minutes and a thinner magnetic tape with a maximum playing time of 207 minutes.
