DNS server (NS)

The nameserver (NS) is a server that assigns IP addresses to domain names. Such a name server belongs to the Domain Name System( DNS) and manages and updates information about the Domain Name System (DNS) structure.

Nameservers convert the simple domain names, such as www.itwissen.info, into the hard-to-remember number combinations in dotted decimal notation and make this information available to the so-called resolvers, which are the DNS clients. For example, the domain name www.itwissen.info hides the IP address 213.133.101.238.

A network can contain an unlimited number of name servers. Since DNS servers must be provided with considerable redundancy, a DNS server always consists of two servers, the Primary Name Server( PNS) and the Secondary Name Server (SNS). The zone files are stored on the primary name server and mirrored to the secondary name server for better availability. If the primary DNS server fails, the secondary DNS server, which always runs in parallel, takes over its tasks.
