DVB terrestrial 2 (DVB-T2)

With DVB- T2, the next generation of digital terrestrial television, high-definition television( HDTV) is to be transmitted via terrestrial radio. Since broadcasting takes place on the same terrestrial frequencies as DVB-T, a higher data rate can only be achieved through better compression methods and transmission technologies.

In order to achieve the set targets of approximately 30% more efficient bandwidth utilization, DVB-T2 compresses the picture content according to MPEG-4 and also uses quadrature amplitudemodulation( QAM 256) as a modulation method, which makes more efficient use of the available frequency bands. However, this has the consequence that the transmission power for the radio link decreases and thus also the transmission range. These limitations could be overcome with denser transmission networks or higher transmission powers, but this would fail due to regulatory requirements.

Since the transmission methods used are technically very complex and, in addition, the reception field strength is much lower with unchanged transmission power, dipole or Yagi antennas would have to be used for reception instead of the rod antenna that can be used with DVB-T. DVB-T2 has error protection, the Low Density Parity Check( LDPC), which provides good results even with severely impaired transmission channels.
