The E13B character set was developed in the 1950s and used primarily by banks in North America, Australia, and some other countries. In Europe, the CMC7 character set, Coded Magnetic Character( CMC). was used as the magnetic character set.

The E13B code consists of the digits 0 to 9 and four special symbols to indicate the amount and the country of issue. E13B and CMC7 were the predecessors of optical character recognition ( OCR) fonts.
