EDI standards

The most important prerequisite for the spread of Electronic Data Interchange(EDI) is generally accepted standards. These standards must relate to both the content and the transmission of messages.

For the standardization of the message content, the international EDIFACT standards are leading the way today. Their merit is that they are developed by independent standardization bodies, the UN Economic Commission and the International Standards Organization( ISO), as well as by national standardization organizations, with broad-based participation and are thus not driven by short-term economic interests. They are also designed to be cross-industry and thus take into account the interconnectedness of services between different sectors of the economy.

Their international character takes into account the diversity of language, dimensions and causes. This is essential because of the globalization of business relations. In the meantime, industries can usually build on an existing subset, such as the EAN- COM subset developed by Centrale Coorganisation in Cologne (CCG), thus saving cost-intensive new developments.
