Ellipso

Ellipso is a satellite communications system that was conceived in the early 1990s but never realized. It was a satellite communications system that was to include Internet communications as well as cellular and long-distance telephone networks. The planned service offering included the Internet, voice and data communications, unified messaging services, positioning and other value added services.

Ellipso was to serve the northern hemisphere with ten LEO satellites and the southern hemisphere with six more. The satellites were to orbit the northern hemisphere on elliptical orbits with near- Earth apses of 630 km and far-Earth apses of 7,600 km. For the southern hemisphere, six satellites were planned to orbit the Earth in a circular orbit. The uplink for the communications link was planned in the L-band, the downlink in the S-band.

Planned communications services also included Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite( GMPCS), Global Mobile Satellite System( GMSS), unified messaging, Internet, and voice communications.

Portions of the Ellipso development effort have been incorporated into the ICO system.
