Ethernet architecture

With Ethernet, the physical transmission medium is accessed via a transceiver. With the classic Ethernet according to 802.310Base-2 or 10Base-5, the transceiver was either in a small housing on the cable or directly on the network card. All other Ethernet variants work exclusively with the card solution.

In the data station( PC or workstation), the preparation of the data to be sent and the evaluation of the received data is performed on the network card. It is also used to manage all the control measures required to operate the Ethernet, e.g. encapsulation of the data, i.e. adding headers and trailers, and carrier and collision detection. In addition to link management, this board also houses the interface to the data station.

The IEEE 802.3 standard has spawned other system variants on different transmission media. Depending on the environments implied by these, the functional elements of the hardware may be distributed somewhat differently.

The components of an Ethernet include the transmission media, the connectors and terminators for the different Ethernet variants, further the Ethernet controller, a transceiver cable and the transceiver itself, which is located on the controller board. In the early years of Ethernet, there was the "Yellow Cable", which was connected by drilling into the cable with a so-called vampire clamp. Other possible hardware components of Ethernet are repeater, star coupler, hub, switch, bridge and router.
