Google play

All mobile device providers maintain download portals for mobile applications. The best known is Apple's App Store. But other smartphone manufacturers and their operating systems also offer mobile app stores for the distribution of software apps. At Google, this portal is called Google Play, previously Android Market, and was launched in 2008.

On Google Play, programs and games for the Android operating system are offered for download. Access to AGoogle Play is a standard feature of the Android mobile operating system and requires a connection from the smartphone via the Internet. Users can also access Google Play from the personal computer via the web.

Android Market

Paid and free programs are offered in Google Play, with the number of free variants at around one- third of the total offer. The total number of apps is in the six- digit range. Most of the apps come from independent developers, who also set the sales price. This includes the extremely interesting app Layar, which adds augmented reality to the smartphone browser. Google developed the CheckOut payment system, which charges for paid apps via major credit cards. Apple offers the Apple Pay payment system. Only if Android apps are made available for download on the developers' website can other payment variants be implemented.

As an open environment, the Android Developers Platform provides independent developers with a number of tutorials, code templates, technical articles and exchange via chat and a forum. Developers must register in the Android Market for a one-time fee. The apps are notreviewed by Google, but Google does charge developers a fee of 30 percent of the purchase price.

In addition to Google, other providers also operate independent online platforms for selling Android apps. These Android stores include AndAppStore, AndroidPIT, GetJar, HandanGo, OnlyAndroid, pdassi or SlideME.
