The H.248 protocol is a Unified Messaging Service( UMS) that was jointly standardized by the International Telecommunication Union ( ITU) and the Internet Engineering Task Force( IETF) as a protocol for signaling and controlling media gateways and thus indirectly for exchanging voice data and video data. H.248 and MEGACO form a functional unit for data traffic between telephone networks and IP networks, which is controlled via special gateways.
