IEEE 802.3 10Base-2

The 10Base-2 standard describes an Ethernet variant with a thin coaxial cable, the RG-58 cable. It arose from the desire for an alternative to the bulky Yellow Cable of the 10Base-5 version. This version is also called Cheapernet or Thinnet.

The data rate is 10 Mbit/s and the topology is a bus topology as with 10Base-5, but only of the max. length 185 m per LAN segment without repeaters. Up to 30 stations can be connected to one LAN segment. In contrast to 10Base-5, a Cheapernet MAU is usually located completely on the adapter card, which must then have a BNC- T connector or a BNC socket for connection to the LAN segment.

10Base-2 also knows the concept of repeaters. By means of suitable devices, 10Base-5 and 10Base-2 segments can be mixed with each other, whereby similar boundary conditions apply as with 10Base-5. A pure Cheapernet can thus be a maximum of 925 m long. 10Base-2 is hardly used anymore, the star-shaped twisted pair cabling of 10Base-T is an economical alternative.
