IEEE 802.3av

The IEEE 802.3av working group has developed the standards for a passive optical network( PON) with a data rate of 10 Gbit/s: 10GEPON The standard includes a symmetrical and an asymmetrical variant.

The 802.3av symmetrical transmission is intended to support data rates of 10 Gbit/s both upstream and downstream. The asymmetric variant is to have 1.25 Gbit/s and later 2.5 Gbit/s upstream and 10 Gbit/s downstream. Both variants will be specified for the same fiber loss classes already used for Gigabit PON( GPON) and Ethernet Passive Optical Network( EPON). This has the advantage that these facilities can also be used later with the new PON systems.

The wavelength ranges are the optical windows at 1,575 nm to 1,580 nm for the downstream and the optical window between 1,260 nm to 1,280 nm for the upstream.
