Internet of things (IoT)

The Internet is a network through which users communicate with each other and use the services offered. These can be information and mail services, business activities such as e-commerce or online shopping, the exchange of files, or the shared use of resources.

It is different with the Internet of Things (IoT) or the Wireless Internet of Things(WIoT). In the IoT concept, IoT devices communicate with each other: smart objects and machines that communicate with each other using machine-to-machine( M2M) communication. Therefore, one should distinguish between IoT concepts for industry and for consumers.

If industry is about factories, machines, production equipment and sensor networks, the consumer-oriented IoT concept is about people and animals, household appliances and consumer electronics devices, commodity products, motor vehicles, medical devices, computers, sensors, power grids and many other objects such as smart wearables. Each individual object of an "Internet of Things" is uniquely identified by the Identity of Things( IDoT) and can be addressed via the Internet and interact with connected information systems. In addition to the Internet of Things explained above, there is also the Industrial Internet of Things ( IIoT) used in industry, or the Internet of Medical Things( IoMT) used in telemedicine.

Applications for Internet of Things

The Internet of Things vision originated with Kevin Ashton and dates back to 1999. The vision at that time is already becoming a reality. However, the trend towards ubiquitous computing requires that every single object has an embedded processor. Work on realizing the "Internet of Things" has been going on for decades, and in some areas there have been promising successes. For example, in telemedicine and patient monitoring, in automotive technology, building automation and home networks, smart wearables, merchandise management and logistics, to name just a few areas. A lot has also changed in addressing. IPv6 provides an addressing range with which an almost unimaginable number of IPv6 addresses can be addressed: namely a 39- digit number.

The worldwide communication of smart objects

In the Internet of Things, any object equipped with intelligence, smart object or intelligent electronic device( IED), can participate in communication. No matter whether measured values from smart meters or sensor data from motion detectors are queried, transactions take place between business partners, vision sensors are used for pattern recognition, actuators are controlled, voice data is exchanged between communication partners or websites are called up via a 2D code. Every object is integrated, a light switch as well as an RFID tag, motor vehicles exchanging traffic information with each other via Car to Car Communication( C2C) or Car to Infrastructure Communication( C2I), patients transmitting their data to a monitoring center or buyers tracking their orders and deliveries on the Internet. Data storage and processing can be done locally or in cloud-basedinfrastructures, Infrastructure as a Service( IaaS).

LPWAN concepts for the Internet of Things (IoT)

LPWAN concepts for the Internet of Things (IoT)

Just like the "Internet of Things", the "Wireless Internet of Things" should make decisions and trigger actions independently without human intervention. For example, locating a container in a port, or raising the temperature of a room, or automatically charging the battery of an electric car, or adding a purchase price to an invoice and simultaneously reordering the product, etc. Internet of Things should improve business processes, reduce process costs and minimize risks.

In addition to Kevin Ashton, who was the first to define the Internet of Things, there are various other definitions, such as from CERP(Cluster of European Research Projects): "The Internet of Things can be defined as a dynamic global network infrastructure that has self-configuring properties, is based on standard communication protocols, and in which physical and virtual "things" have their own identities and physical attributes, and which uses intelligent interfaces."

The evolution from the Internet of Things (IoT) is to the Internet of Everything( IoE).
