Internet2
Internet2 is a consortium of over 200 American universities and research institutions with the goal of making the Internet more efficient and faster.
The project was launched in 1996 by the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development (UCAID). At that time, the goal was defined as a transmission rate of 2.48 Gbit/s. This goal has long since been achieved. This goal has long since been achieved and is being exceeded time and again.
In 1999, European partner organizations also joined UCAID. Then, in June 2000, the German Internet2 was launched and now connects more than 500 German research institutions. It is called X-win and is operated by the German Research Network. It has 9,500 kilometers of fiber optic network in Germany and, as a multi- gigabit network, enables data rates in the terabit range.
