Local Bus

The Local Bus is a system bus that was specially developed for graphics cards and via whose plug-in cards fast peripherals can be connected.

The Local Bus, developed in 1991, became the standard bus for 486s. It has a direct connection to the processor, by which it is clocked and used, and was an alternative to the PCI bus that became popular in Pentium computers. The Local Bus initially had a data bus width of 16 bits, later 32 bits in the VLB bus.

Local bus concepts are characterized by their expansion capability and speed. Some concepts are characterized by the fact that the peripheral devices can operate with the same clock rate and data path width as the CPU.
