MPEG-7

MPEG-7 is a multimedia standard for defining and describing multimedia content. MPEG-7 is titled"Multimedia Content Description Interface" and is limited to the syntax and semantics of the characteristics ofaudio, video, graphics, speech, photos, etc. and how these elements can be archived, merged and synchronized.

Since rapid growth of multimedia data and its storage in databases and online archives, requires an object description that allows both humans and computers to recognize specific sequences, transport them over networks, and adapt them in file format to the terminal device in use.

The description of multimedia data must be equally applicable to analog content such as video clips or movies and to the various digitalfile formats.

The syntax of the text format is described in the Description Definition Language( DDL) and builds on the Extensible Markup Language(XML), which has been extended to include the description for audiovisual content. Other description elements can be used to describe colors, color spaces, and color distribution, for example. Still others are for describing spaces, motion, and recording techniques.

The main application of MPEG-7 is the digital media library, which can be queried from anywhere.
