OSI management

The aim of OSI management is the integration of different management tools in heterogeneous environments. In contrast to OSI management, the term network management forms a more comprehensive approach.

OSI management refers to OSI resources (OSIE, OSI Environment) in an OSI environment. In practice, OSI management is intended to ensure conformance and interoperability in heterogeneous network management. OSI management is mainly found in large national and international networks. It is accepted by the International Telecommunication Union( ITU) and forms the basis for Telecommunications Network Management, TNM.

The development of OSI management

Standards for OSI management have been developed and published as a draft( DIS) or international standard since 1979. The standards cover the architecture of OSI management, an application protocol, and the means by which management information is to be handled, presented, and evaluated.

OSI Management Architecture

The OSI management framework is an ISO standardization document(DIS 7498-4) that provides guidelines for coordinating the evolution of existing OSI management standards. The framework defines the terminology of OSI management and describes its fundamental concepts. For this purpose, an abstract model is created as a supplement to the OSI reference model, which shows the goals and possibilities of OSI management. In addition, the framework defines the five functional areas, the concept of layer management and that for managed objects( MO). Managed Objects are defined by their properties, the operations that can be performed on them, and the relationships to other Managed Objects, and are stored in a MIB.

Functional areas of OSI management

The concept for OSI system management was significantly expanded and revised in late 1988. There are now two major conceptual groups:

System Management Models and System Management Standards. System management( SMO), standardized under International Standard( IS) 10040, provides an overview of OSI management.

The following system management standards are important: Common Management Information Services / Common Management Information Protocols( CMIS/ CMIP) are OSI protocols and services for dialogs between the entities that initiate management functions and the entities that perform management functions.

The functional model introduces the concept of specific management functional areas SMFA. According to it, there are five functional areas:

  • Configuration management as a set of functions to identify, monitor, and control managed objects to support uninterrupted operation of connection services.
  • Fault management for handling fault conditions.
  • Performance management as a set of functions to evaluate the behavior of objects and the effectiveness of connection activities.
  • Security management enables control and distribution of information in the context of ensuring information integrity in various open systems.
  • Billing management is a set of functions that enables billing for services of an open system based on the usage costs for managed objects.
