PacketCable

PacketCable is an initiative of CableLabs for the development of interoperable interfaces with which many multimedia services can be used on cable distribution networks.

PacketCable is based on the DOCSIS cable modem standard and offers IP-based services such as Internet telephony( VoIP), video conferencing, interactive video games, Internet television( IPTV) and other multimedia services. A Docsis-based cable distribution network with PacketCable has sufficient bandwidth for high-speed applications and with definable quality of service. It includes the provisioning standard for voice-enabled modems based on SNMP.

In addition to Docsis, PacketCable supports the IP protocol, for real-time data transfer the Realtime Transport Protocol( RTP) and the Realtime Control Protocol( RTCP), the long-distance telephone network( PSTN) and various signaling protocols.
