RAN intelligent controller (5G) (RIC)

The RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) is a central component of an open and virtualized radio access network (RAN). With this component, mobile network operators can optimize existing mobile services and implement new services by optimizing the use of network resources.

As an intelligent controller, the RIC controller supports interoperability between hardware and software from different vendors. It is connected to the other functional units of Open-RAN, i.e. the Radio Unit( RU), Distributed Unit( DU) and the Centralised Unit( CU) via standardized interfaces. The functionality of the RIC controller relates to subscriber positioning, signal transfer toa radio cell and frequency switching to another radio frequency. Furthermore, it is about performance optimization by adjusting various variables.
