RDMA over converged Ethernet (InfiniBand) (RoCE)

In 2010, the InfiniBand Trade Association( IBTA) developed RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE), a high-speed technology for transmitting InfiniBand over Ethernet as InfiniBand over 10GbE. RoCE is a technology that enables efficient use of computing resources by reducing the number of servers and thus the amount ofcabling required. This improves data centerperformance and also requires less energy.

In terms of approach, RoCE technology works with extremely broadband server I/Os. This gives users great flexibility and a complementary technique to the virtualization used today. With its short latency, RoCE can improve performance for time-critical applications in research, databases, finance, or large transactions.

Remote DMA (RDMA) is one of the most important technologies in High Performance Computing( HPC), both for computers and storage networks, but using special InfiniBand hardware. Under RoCE, RDMA can be deployed directly in data centers and cloud computing without the need for new Ethernet switches or adapters.
