The switched broadband network was an experimental network installed in the 1980s. The precursor broadband network launched on February 23, 1989 was later referred to as the "switched broadband network".
The VBN provided 1,000 network connections at 140 Mbit/s in industrial centers from Munich to Hamburg and in Berlin for testing broadband individual communications services. The self-dialing network can be used for videoconferencing, telemedicine, telepublishing and high-speed computer networking. It was operated by Deutsche Telekom and discontinued in the 1990s.
