Travan drive

Travan(TR) is a digital tape drive technology based on Quarter Inch Cartridge( QIC). Travan tapes are significantly longer than QIC tapes at 228m. In addition, the 8-mm Travan tapes are written 2.36 times more densely than QIC tapes.

The various Travan formats differ in their storage capacities, data transfer rates, number of data tracks, encoding format and recording density, which is determined by the Mangnet tape material and coercivity. Travan offers the following performance classes:

TR1 mini-cartridges, with 400 megabytes( MB) of uncompressed data, a data transfer rate of 125 KB/s, and compatible with QIC-80. The DAtentransfer rate is 62.5 KB/s, and the number of tracks is 36. As a recording format, TR1, TR2, and TR3 used the MFM method, Modified Frequency Modulation (MFM). Recording densities range from 14,700 bits per inch( bpi) to 44,700 bpi.

TR2 mini cartridges with 800 MB storage capacity, a data transfer rate of 62.5 KB/s and compatible with QIC-3010. The number of tracks is 50.

TR3 mini-cartridges with 1.6 gigabytes( GB), a data transfer rate of 125 KB/s and compatible with QIC-3025

TR4 with up to 4 GB, a data transfer rate between 1 MB/s and compatible with QIC-3095. As recording method, TR4 uses the RLL method, Run Length Limited (RLL), just like TR5.

TR5 with 10 GB and TR7 with 20 GB of uncompressed data. The data transfer rates are 2 MB/s (TR5) and 4 MB/s for TR7. TR7 uses the partial response maximum likelihood (PMLR) method as the recording method. For data recording, 108 data tracks are available for TR5 and TR7.
