WiFi multimedia (WMM)

With WiFiMultimedia (WMM), the WiFi Alliance has defined a procedure for determining the quality of service( QoS) in WLANs.

The WMM procedure corresponds to Enhanced Distributed Channel Access( EDCA) from 802.11e and allocates different bandwidths to the various applications based on prioritization with bandwidthmanagement. WiFi Multimedia particularly supports the streaming of multimedia content and optimizes the bandwidth distribution between applications running in parallel. WLAN traffic is identified and sorted into queues to give priority to data packets with higher priority, such as those for voice applications.

WMM prioritizes queues by voice, video, best- effort and background. Voice data can thus be sent at the same time as other data types, since the two have different priorities.
