announcement traffic indication message (802.11) (ATIM)

Announcement Traffic Indication Message (ATIM), also called Ad-hoc Traffic Indication Message, is a Traffic Indication Message( TIM) used in 802.11WLANs to notify peers of an upcoming data transfer.

The ATIM message informs peers that frames exist and are cached. The ATIM message is transmitted between wireless stations, and prevents WLAN stations from entering power-save mode. The ATIM message is sent out with other control messages from the peer that wants to enable data transfer. The transmission takes place in the ATIM window at the beginning of the beacon period.
