Antistatic material minimizes electrostatic charges(ESC) and thereby reduces electrostatic discharges( ESD), which can cause damage to sensitive electronic components, circuit boards or devices.

Antistatic material is therefore used to protect such components and assemblies, as antistatic packaging material, antistatic flooring, cleaning fleece or wrist tape.

The definitions of antistatic and static dissipative material target familiar terms and measurable quantities that are familiar to users. While the definition of antistatic material refers to the specific material properties and associated surface resistance and is expressed in ohm-meters or ohms per area, static dissipative material depends on the thickness of the conductive layer located on an insulating substrate. Antistatic material has a surface resistivity that is between `10^9` and `10^14` ohms per unit area.
