Artifical Passenger(AP) is a driver assistance system that warns the driver of microsleep when fatigue sets in. The sleep warning systems operating in Germany monitor the driver's behavior and trigger an alarm in the event of deviations from normal driving behavior.

Sleep warning systems monitor the driver's eyes and facial expressions. The Artifical Passenger (AP) concept, designed to protect drivers from fatigue, relies on conversation and entertainment. The artificial passenger asks questions that the driver has to answer, and from the response behavior the system draws conclusions about the fatigue state. The conversation is based on the personal driver profile. In addition, a camera can observe facial expressions. Depending on the degree of fatigue, the artificial co-driver can also open the windows to let in fresh air, turn up the background music or activate a wake-up call.
