automatic noise limiter (ANL)

The automatic noise limiter (ANL) is an electronic circuit used in mobile radio equipment, in CB equipment and shortwave receivers.

With the automatic noise limiter and the directly related noise blanker, on the one hand the level of the useful signal is increased, which improves the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N). In addition, the bandwidth is reduced so that not so many high frequencies are reproduced.

In addition, there are electronic circuits where you can set a level at which transients, static noise spikes, electrostatic noise from lightning discharges or crackling noise from electrical devices are clipped.
