An automatic vehicle locator(AVL) is a navigation system that is installed in cars. It is used to determine the position of the vehicle and transmits the position coordinates to the company or fleet management.

AVL systems use the GPS system and electronic road maps to determine coordinates. They transmit their coordinates for position determination to the company headquarters via cellular networks with GSM modules with integrated GPS functionality.

Fleet management can calculate the location of the vehicle from the transmitted geographic coordinates, as well as the direction and speed at which the vehicle is moving. It can inform customers who are in the vicinity about the estimated time of arrival and optimize routes.
