automotive safety integrity level (automotive) (ASIL)

Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) is a key component of the ISO 26262 standard. The ASIL level has evolved from the Safety Integrity Level( SIL). With the introduction of the automotive standard ISO 26262, the SIL specifications were replaced by the Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL).

The ASIL level is determined at the beginning of each development process. In the process, the system functions are analyzed and placed in relation to possible risks. The focus of the development of the standard for automotive safety levels is on how the risks of the driver and those of other road users are assessed in the event of a malfunction in the motor vehicle. This risk assessment is specified in the ISO 26262 standard. The risks assessed by ASIL are determined by the probability of the hazard potential, the controllability by the driver and the accident severity. ASIL does not refer to the technologies used in the systems, but only to the injuries to the driver and other road users.

ASIL requirements for metrics

Each hazard is evaluated based on the severity of possible injuries and refers to time a vehicle may be exposed to a possible hazardous situation and the probability in which a driver may typically act.

Various metrics are defined in ISO 26262 to evaluate safety requirements. These include the Failures in Time( FIT), the Single Point Fault Metric( SPFM) and the Latent Fault Metric( LFM). ASIL distinguishes between four different ASIL risk levels, labeled ASIL-A, ASIL-B, ASIL-C and ASIL-D, and reports all metrics for all risk levels. Each risk level represents a tenfold increase in risk potential over the previous level. ASIL-A has the lowest risk level and ASIL-D has a tenfold higher risk potential compared to ASIL-A.
