autorun
Autorun is a function of Windows that is activated when inserting optical media - compact discs, DVDs, Blu-Ray discs - or when inserting USB sticks or external storage devices.
In the Autorun function, the operating system searches the root directories of the media for the Autorun.inf file, which contains information about the name of the disk, the functions to be executed and the program. The operating system automatically accesses the Autorun.inf file, opens it and starts the program, for example an installation program. At the same time, the function to be executed is displayed in a window.
If there is no Autorun.inf file on the inserted media, Windows activates the autoplay mode and prompts the user for appropriate actions, such as opening files, playing videos or other actions.
