base station system application part (GSM) (BSSAP)

The Base Station System Application Part (BSSAP) is a protocol for GSM specified by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute( ETSI), also called Radio Subsystem Application Part, which consists of the Direct Transfer Application Part( DTAP) and the Base Station System Management Application Part( BSSMAP).

The DTAP protocol supports message exchange between the mobile switching system( MSC) and the mobile station. This is used to transmit connection confirmations( CC) and mobile management( MM) messages to and from the mobile station transparently to the Base Station Subsystem( BSS). The BSSMAP is the actual protocol between the subsystem and the mobile switching center. The BSSMAP messages are mainly used for channel resource management.
