batch file
A batch file is a text file containing a continuous sequence of commands for the operating system. It is called a batch file because it bundles entire sets of commands into a single file that would otherwise have to be entered individually from a keyboard.
Batch files are created when recurring operations are involved. A batch file is created simply by stringing commands together, giving them a file name, and invoking them by typing the batch file name into the command line.
When the batch file is called, the operating system processes the successive commands in sequence. Under Disk Operating System( DOS) batch files have the extension *.bat. The best known is autoexe.bat, which initiates the DOS operating system after the computer is switched on. Under Unix the batch file is called shellscript.
Batch files are processed in batch mode.
