battery law

In 2009, the Battery Act (BattG) was passed in Germany. This law is about the recycling of batteries, with which the companies designated as manufacturers batteries and accumulators are obliged to dispose of.

According to the German Battery Act, manufacturers are all those who place batteries and rechargeable batteries on the market in Germany. It does not matter whether these are sold in packaged form or are built into a device. It applies to all types of batteries: Primary and secondary cells, battery sets, battery packs, portable batteries, automotive batteries and industrial batteries.

Under the current draft law, manufacturers and distributors must register with the Federal Environmental Agency. Only registered manufacturers are allowed to put batteries and accumulators into circulation under the draft. The German Battery Act is an implementation of the EU Directive 2006/66/ EC in which the limit values for hazardous substances such as mercury (Hg) and cadmium( Cd) are also specified.
