Beam steering is a technique used in radio engineering, acoustics and optical transmission technology.

Radio beam steering is concerned with the angle of radiation and the shape of the radiation pattern, of the radio signals transmitted by antennas. This technology is used in 5th generation( 5G) cellular networks and in radar technology.

In radio and radar systems, beam steering can be achieved by switching the antenna elements or by changing the signal amplitudes and signal phases of the RF signals transmitted by the antenna. These measures change the widths of the transmit lobes, the beam pattern, the beam shaping and the beam angle.
