block organized memory

Block-organized memory is a memory organization used in hard disks, floppy disks, compact discs, magnetic tapes and magnetic cards. Like word-organized memories, they have quasi-selective access to the storage elements.

In addition to quasi-random access, magnetic tapes and magnetic cards also have sequential access.

Quasi-selective access can be used to access the storage elements in any order. The block start is characteristic for the stored information. The access time is variable and, in the case of magnetic tape devices, depends on the location of the information on the magnetic tape.

In memories with sequential access, the stored information is accessed via the order in which the storage elements are arranged.
