buck-boost converter

A buck-boost converter is a combination of buck and boost DC-DC converter. As a buck converter, a buck-boost converter can reduce an input DC voltage that is too high, and as a boost converter, it can raise an input voltage that is too low to a higher voltage level.

Buck-boost converters provide a constant DC output voltage regardless of whether the converter's input voltage is high or low and regardless of voltage fluctuations or dropping battery voltages. Buck-boost converters are used, for example, in cell phones in which battery voltage can decrease with usage time. This provides cell phones with a constant voltage regardless of the battery voltage.
