build up response

Transient response is an undesirable effect that occurs when one state transitions to another. This behavior is due to moments of inertia, hysteresis and time constants and occurs whenever a level changes abruptly from a low value to a high value, or vice versa.

The transient response can be determined by two characteristic values:

  1. by the time that the transient process takes, the settling time or attack time, and
  2. by the level reached after the settling time.

Because of the causation, for example a time constant, transients always have a non-linear function, which in the case of a time constant has an exponential course. The transient response is defined as a DIN standard in many areas and can cause technical or acoustic problems and impair intelligibility or transmission if these values are exceeded.

Transient response occurs in all electronic, optical and acoustic fields, but is primarily considered in acoustics, in amplifiers, power amplifiers, hearing aids, loudspeakers and other components.
