call attempts per second (CAPS)

Call Attempts per Second (CAPS) is another indicator of the performance of switching systems and switched wide- area networks in addition to Busy Hour Call Attempts ( BHCA).

Call Attempts per Second refers to the number of busy attempts within one second. The CAPS value applies to both circuit-switched systems and IP-basedservices such as Internet telephony.

The number of actual connections can be calculated from the number of connection attempts (CAPS), average connection time, average call duration( ACD), and average success rate( ASR). For example, if an exchange can process a CAPS value of 100, i.e., 100 connection requests per second, and the average probability of the actual connection being made is 50%, and the average connection duration is 1 minute, then the number of simultaneous connections made is 3,000.
