A chatroom or chat room is a virtual space, a website where visitors can share their opinions with each other in real time and interactively discuss and chat. The visitors of a chat room are anonymous and hide behind a pseudonym. They are characterized by the same interests. During a chat, the number of visitors currently logged in is displayed. If a new visitor enters the chat room, this is immediately made known to the chat room visitors. Visitors type their opinion into a text box, which can be immediately read and commented by others.
Depending on the conceptual orientation, all visitors and lurkers of a chat room can immediately follow the textually contributed contributions and opinions, this is referred to as Multi-User Chat( MUC). In other chat rooms, on the other hand, only two communication partners can exchange their ideas without third parties being able to see them.
According to the variety of topics there is also a corresponding variety of chat rooms about all imaginable, possible and impossible topics. There are hundreds of thousands of chat rooms in which every individual can participate and express his opinion or experience. There are public chat rooms where no registration is required, others that require registration and login, and still others that charge a fee.
In chat rooms, opinions are exchanged in real time. On the other hand, in discussion forums and newsgroups, messages are posted without waiting for a response, as this may not be entered until several hours or days later.
