circuit emulation service (ATM) (CES)

Circuit Emulation Service (CES) is a service defined by the ATM Forum that provides a virtual connection that emulates a CBR(Constant Bit Rate) connection with dedicated bandwidth.

The CES specification specifically supports emulation of existing connections in time division multiplex or concentration of multiple circuit emulation streams for voice and video with packet data over ATM networks.

The Circuit Emulation Service is typically implemented in ATM switches, as well as ATM edge devices such as routers. The CES process is primarily used for communication between non-ATM trunk components such as PBXs or time division multiplexers, or video components such as video codecs with ATM components.
