citizen band radio service (CBRS)

Citizens Band Radio Services (CBRS) is a technology in the 3.5 GHz range that could be used to build wireless, private- sector 5G networks. CRBS services could complement or replace existing radio networks such as WiFi.

In 2015, the Federal Communications Commission( FCC) had cleared spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band between 3.550 GHz and 3.700 GHz for commercial and wireless broadband use for CBRS services. As a result, CBRS can be used to supplement or replace LTE networks or for broadband access to New Radio, a 5G technology. In addition, enterprise LTE networks lend themselves to campus and indoor applications, as well as industrial applications in the Internet of Things( IoT). Point-to-multipoint connections, small cell backhauls or radio bridging in the access area as an alternative to DSL technologies or optical access networks( OAN) are further areas of application. The bridgeable distance is about 2 km outdoors with line-of-sight connections.

The CBRS characteristics are designed so that the 3.5 GHz frequency range can be used by companies and the CRBS services do not interfere with other radio systems such as radar systems. The frequencies are auctioned off.
