clinical document architecture (medical) (CDA)

The Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) is a standard for the exchange of medical documents and their storage. CDA documents are based on Extensible Markup Language(XML) and are developed by Health Level Seven( HL7).

CDA documents are, among others, operation reports, reports on treatments, prescriptions, doctor's letters, referrals or administrative letters as they are common between hospitals, doctors' practices and health insurance companies. CDA documents are used to standardize medical documents on an XML basis, enabling better exchange of information between the institutions involved, physicians and patients. CDA documents can include Electronic Health Records( EHR) with images, photos and text.

CDA documents use a standardized structure with defined characteristics. They are made of extremely robust material and are therefore very durable, they are maintained by an organization, the information stored on them is authentic and cannot be manipulated, and they can be read on web browsers. Data security can be ensured with Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes( LOINC).
