The production of optical fib ers is based on a glass tube (preform) several centimeters thick, into which the core glass material is introduced in a hot gas phase and precipitates on the inner walls of the tube. Before a glass fiber can be drawn from it, the tube must shrink to form a rod. This shrinking process is called collapsing.
