A commerce server is a server that provides the technological basis for eCommerce website and electronic stores.

A commerce server enables online business transactions. The transactions are mostly carried out with the corresponding credit card information of the buyer and the Secure Socket Layer( SSL). Commerce servers link an eCommerce website to existing merchandise management systems. They are also the basis for integration into a technological multi- channel solution.

A well-known and very widespread solution is the Microsoft Commerce Server. It uses Microsoft .Net technology. In November 2011, Microsoft transferred the further development of this Commerce Server solution to the company Ascentium.
